James "Marmaduke" Seton, one of the most beloved Scouters from
the Hiawatha Council. He gave much of his time, money, and effort promoting
the Scouting program for decades, involved with Boy Souts, Girl Scouts and
Voyageurs, in the US and Canada. Marmaduke died in 2003. This patch was
given to all those attending summer camp at Sabattis Scout Reservation and
Camp Portaferry (the Adirondack Scout Camps) in 2005 as a tribute to
Marmaduke. It features Marmaduke's trademark orange backpack and canoe
paddle, his red Voyager cap, the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver,
Wood Badge Beads, Vigil Honor Sash, and Old Goat #7. (The "Old Goats" is a
name informally given to some veteran Scouters from the Onondaga Council in
the early 1960's, before evolving with into a more formal group. "Nanny
Goats" [female members] were added beginning in the 1990's, and new members
are still inducted annually.) |
