Heffernan Hiker

This badge was given during World War II (specifically 1943- 1945) to Scouts who hiked 30 miles from Bloomington, Illinois to Camp Heffernan and back. It was used to encourage Scouts to help save gasoline during the war time.

30 Club patch

Updated information: This patch was called the 30 Club patch, not Heffernan Hiker.
This patch was first awarded on January 28, 1943. It was given to Scouts for hiking 30 miles, usually from Bloomington, Illinois to Camp Heffernan and back, carrying a full backpack. The award was created as part of the 1943 activity program with the slogan Toughen Up and Buckle Down. Scouts hiking the 30 miles became members of the 30 Club The award continued to be given into 1946.
