The 70 years after refers to severe forest fires that swept through the area which includes the camp in 1908. These fires destroyed much of the surrounding forest area, including the village of Long Lake West, later renamed Sabattis, and from which the camp takes its name. A State historic marker on the road into camp states that one of these fires, on September 26, 1908, was the most destructive fire in the history of New York State.
